Happy New Year.

And with that, it is time for the annual ritual of listing last year's ten best films. As always, I have a list of MY favorite flicks from the past year (along with ten honorable mentions) and a list of what I consider to be last year's ten best films (the kind the awards folks' love to honor).

The top ten FILMS of 2009:

1)  Precious
2)  The Hurt Locker
3)  Inglourious Basterds
4)  Up in the Air
5)  Avatar
6)  Up
7)  The Messenger
8)  An Education
9)  Invictus
10) A Serious Man

A few notes about the best FILMS. I have no idea what the critics see in "Up in the Air." Is it a bad film? No. But is it the best? No. Still, review after review and critic after critic ranks this at the top of the charts. Not me. I see a perfectly fine and commendable comedy, but will not give  Clooney and Company the number one rank.

That's because number one goes to "Precious." Even I was nearly in tears when Precious gave her "nobody ever loved me" speech. This film should walk away with Globes and Oscars for Best Picture AND the two female actors. The film was hard to watch. It was cruel. It was real. It was the best.

"The Hurt Locker" and "Inglourious Basterds" are the only two other films that should have a chance at upsetting "Precious." If anything else wins, it will be another sad night  for film (I am looking at you, "Slumdog Millionaire").

"Avatar" was cool, but doesn't deserve anything other than tech awards. "The Messenger" and "An Education" are amazing, but will not appeal to most. "Invictus" was a serious letdown, but is a great film to see if you like the re-writing of history to make so-so leaders look awe-inspiring.

Lastly, "Up" and "A Serious Man" are thrown in the mix. Last year's "Wall-E" deserved a best pic nod instead of being relegated to just the animation category. "Up" will likely get a spot to make up for that. Sadly, "Up" is not as deserving. I am happy for the Pixar shout-out, but it comes a year and a film too late.
